What is a Proxy Wine? Alcohol Free Alternatives
What is a Proxy Wine?
A Proxy Wine is NOT an alcohol-free wine, being a wine which has had the alcohol removed. This invasive way is usually through a technical process called Reverse Osmosis, which basically attacks the wine through a membrane at high pressure and using heat and a vacuum, spins the alcohol out of the wine and makes it even more processed. This is why whenever you have tried an alcohol free wine... we imagine you agree it never tastes good.
A Proxy Wine is instead an alternative drink with similarities to wine, but usually with a Kombucha or Kefir base, and then additional ingredients added to create the IMPRESSION of a natural wine. The fact it has Kefir or Kombucha as the base, means it is still fermented and so can often have a slightly yeasty touch too.
Fermented Proxy Wines usually have 0.2%- 0.4% alcohol, which is the same amount of Alcohol found in a ripe banana.
Are all Proxy Wines fermented?
There are also proxy wines which are not fermented, but instead high quality juices and ingredients added. As these are not fermented, they can sometimes be a little sweeter than those which are. For example check out Antidote by Domaine des Grottes, who uses his own gamay juice, infused with herbs from the vineyard as well as ginger to create a delicious beveage
