'Living wines' from Burgenland

The Pittnauers have their vineyards and winery in Gols, a small town on Lake Neusiedl in the Burgenland wine region of Austria. Gerhard inherited the vineyard at only 18 years old when his father died unexpectedly, and took somewhat of an experimental approach with no set winemaking philosophy in the beginning. What he learned along the way, though, was that his favorite wines to drink all had one thing in common: biodynamics. After having figured this out, Gerhard and Brigitte adopted this approach to winemaking in 2006, doing all work in the vineyards manually, and not conforming to a calendar but instead letting the grapes and winemaking take their time, resulting in what they call ‘living wine’.

Showcasing indigenous Austrian varieties

Pittnauer is a member of Pannobile (along with Claus Preisinger and Judith Beck), an Austrian wine association created by friends and colleagues who wanted to steer away from marketable, international wine grapes and styles and instead make premium wines from regional grapes that expressed the unique terroir. Also in 2007, together with other winemakers, the Pittnauers co-founded 'Respect', an international group of leading biodynamic wineries.

They are are most known for their red varieties, but in particular, the very Austrian variety Saint Laurent. In fact, of around 27 hectares of vineyards, more than 90% of them are red grape varieties. The Pittnauers focus on manual work in the vineyards, limiting yields, to ensure in the healthiest grapes possible. In the cellar, they refrain from using enzymes, pure yeasts and excessive use of wood in their wines.
