Styria | Steirmark Wine | Natural Wine from Styria
In regards to Natural Wine, Styria is a real hotspot of quality. Also known locally as Steirmark, this beautiful, hilly Austrian region is located along the Slovenian border. While the amount of wine produced is little compared to other regions in Austria, it is known for producing very high quality wines full of minerality and a real sense of Terroir.
The most popular white grape varieties include Welschreisling, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer, and Chardonnay (known locally as Morillon), while the most common red grape varieties are Pinot Noir, Saint Laurent, Zweigelt, and Blauer Wildbacher.
Popular natural wine producers in Styria include Andreas Tscheppe, Tauss, Strohmeier, Werlitsch (Ewald Tscheppe) and Sepp Muster, who actually form the group "Schmecke Das Leben" which is a collective dedicated to assiting each other and themselves to sustainable, chemical free and holisitic practices. Other notable producers include Karl Schnable and Ploder-Rosenberg.
