Lino Maga | Barbacarlo
Lino Maga | Barbacarlo is a natural wine producer from the Lombardy region in Italy known for his incredibly unique wines named simply after his two vineyards Barbacarlo and Montebuono. His full-bodied red wines from Barbera, Croatina, Uva Rara, and Ughetta grapes are bottled sometimes even before fermentation is complete..
Vintages can taste vastly different, and will age well up to 30 years.
Perched on a steep, four-hectare amphitheatre above Broni, the Barbacarlo cru has been tended by the Maga family since 1886. No herbicides, no lab yeast, no shortcuts – just Croatina, Uva Rara, Barbera and Ughetta coaxed to life by wild fermentations in ancient casks. The late Lino Maga fought for decades to defend the vineyard’s name, bottling the wine before fermentation is completely finished to lock in a gentle natural sparkle and the quirks of every harvest.
Today his son Giuseppe continues the same stubborn, low-intervention approach, releasing only a few thousand bottles that can age for decades while still bursting with violet, forest-fruit and earthy spice. Barbacarlo isn’t merely a wine; it’s Lombardy’s limestone, history and rebellious spirit captured in liquid form.
We suggest to age these iconic, big wines for a while before drinking.
