NATURAL WINES BY MAX SEIN WEIN

Max Sein Wein is Max Baumann's label in Dertingen, in the Tauber valley in north-east Baden. His family have grown grapes for generations, and Max went his own way after working at Gut Oggau and Judith Beck, releasing his first vintage in 2016. His vines grow on shell limestone and red and yellow sandstone, with Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Gewürztraminer, Kerner, Ortega, Bacchus, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Max prefers blends to single grapes, often mixing directly pressed juice with skin-macerated lots. The wines age 9 to 10 months in old barrels, then another six months in bottle before release, and are generally bottled without added sulphur. They open up nicely with some air. Popular bottles are Rouge, mostly Pinot Meunier, Pur Jus, Blanc and Les Autochtones, while Austernkalk and Trio Sauvage are worth a look if you like skin contact.
