The Burgundy Soils of Derain
The heart of Domaine Derain is Saint-Aubin, a small village tucked in a side valley of the Côte de Beaune, just behind the grand cru hill that gives the world Montrachet. It is a cooler, higher, less-famous corner than its glittering neighbours, Chassagne and Puligny, which for years kept prices sane and let a natural grower buy in. The soils here are classic Burgundy, pale limestone and clay over rock, and they give whites of real cut and tension and reds with a fine, mineral edge.
Saint-Aubin remains the home base, but the domaine reaches well beyond it. Julien and Carole tend old vine plots scattered across several appellations, each bringing something different. In Pommard, further up the Côte de Beaune, the clay is richer and the Pinot Noir comes out darker and more structured. Over in Mercurey, down in the Côte Chalonnaise to the south, the wines are earthy, sappy and brilliant value.
They even reach up into the Côte de Nuits, the northern half of Burgundy, with fruit from around Gevrey-Chambertin, home of some of the region's most powerful reds. Add in everyday Bourgogne bottlings from younger vines and you have a spread that covers a lot of Burgundy in one small cellar.
What ties it together is how the land is worked. Every plot is farmed without chemicals, the soils kept alive with ploughing rather than sprays, so each parcel can speak clearly. The range is a little tour of the region, seen through one honest, consistent lens.

The Sextant Project, Explained
Alongside the family estate, Julien and Carole run a second venture called Sextant, and it is well worth understanding the difference. Domaine Derain wines come from the family's own farmed vines. Sextant is a négociant project, which means Julien buys in grapes from other growers rather than farming every vine himself.
He started Sextant in 2007, while still working under Dominique, as a way to make his own wine and stretch his ideas. The name comes from the old navigation instrument, the sextant, a nod to a family fascination with reading position from the stars. It fits a project all about finding your bearings and charting a course.
The crucial point is that négoce does not mean cutting corners. Julien only buys fruit from growers who farm without chemicals,then vinifies everything himself in the same cellar as the domaine wines, with the same hands-off approach.
What négoce does allow is freedom and volume. Because he is not limited to his own small holdings, Julien can work with a wider range of grapes and appellations, making more bottles at friendlier prices. Sextant is where you find the playful stuff, from gluggable Gamay and Aligoté to skin contact whites and fizzy pét-nats, sitting next to serious village and premier cru wines.
Think of it as two sides of the same mind. The domaine is the deep, rooted expression of specific family plots. Sextant is the roving, curious, more affordable other half.
Popular Wines: Landré and En Remilly
Two Domaine Derain bottles show off the estate beautifully, one everyday and one special. Start with the Landré Bourgogne Blanc. This is a straight Chardonnay from the Saint-Aubin area, and it is the kind of honest, well-priced white Burgundy that has become almost impossible to find. Fresh, chalky and precise, with orchard fruit and a saline mineral snap, it drinks well young but has the structure to age. Recent vintages have been made with no added sulphur at all, a proper zero-zero white Burgundy, which is rare and rather thrilling.
For something with more ambition, reach for the Saint-Aubin En Remilly. En Remilly is a premier cru vineyard on the rocky upper slope that is effectively a continuation of the Montrachet hill, sitting just above some of the most famous grand crus on earth. The Chardonnay here comes from vines around 35 years old and rests on its lees for a year, building texture and depth.
The result is a white of real class. Taut, stony and mineral, with citrus and white flowers, a creamy core and a long, saline finish. It is the kind of premier cru that would cost a fortune from a big name, offered here at a natural grower's fair price.
Between them, these two capture the estate's gift. The Landré proves great white Burgundy does not have to be expensive, while the En Remilly shows just how high these old vines and this careful, chemical-free farming can reach when the site is truly special.
