MG VOM SOL / MICHI'S FARM
MG vom Sol is Michael Gindl, and the winery is also known as Michi's Farm. This is one of the few natural estates in the Weinviertel north of Vienna, on a family farm owned since 1807. He decided to make the move away from conventional farming after noticing how alive his grandfather's wines tasted, which were made without chemicals. The 10 hectares are around Hohenruppersdorf at 240 metres, on loam, loess and sandstone. The name refers to SOL, the village's first documented vineyard, from the 14th century.
Horses, miniature sheep and Highland cattle work the vineyards, and even the barrels are made from wood from the nearby forest. They are acacia and oak casks of 500 to 1,500 litres. Fermentation is spontaneous without temperature control, wines stay long on the lees, and selected cuvées get a small dose of sulphur before bottling. Buteo and Little Buteo are Grüner Veltliner.
