It is primarily grown in the regions of Abruzzo where it is known as Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and was made famous by Emidio Pepe, who showcased its excellent ability to age for long periods of time. It is also found in Marche in Italy, where it thrives in the warm Mediterranean climate. This grape is also cultivated in other parts of Italy, such as Molise and Puglia, as well as in regions outside of Italy, including Australia and the United States.

Montepulciano grapes produce wines that are known for their deep color and rich flavors. The wines made from this grape are typically full-bodied, with moderate acidity and soft tannins.
