Spigle Bocky Orange 2020 is a natural wine crafted by Richard Stavek, in the Castilla-Léon region in Czech Republic.

This orange wine is made with Riesling Italico, Malvasia, Grüner Veltliner, Neuburger, Riesling Renano, Müller-Thurgau and Moscato Moravo grapes, which are taken from grapes 50 years old.

Spigle Bocky Orange is semi-carbonic macerated and spends 12 months macerating on the mash.

Richard Stávek is one of the early pioneers of making natural wine in the Czech Republic, and started in the early 90's in the most common region for making wine, Moravia. He is not just a winemaker, but runs a farm with sheep of which he also makes cheese from amongst other things.

He farms 4.5 Hectares of wines with vines on average around 50 years old, on sandy soils. His wines can be experimentals, and usually featuring little known Czech Varietals too…

We ship every Wednesday. Order by Tuesday 10am.

WHAT IS ORANGE WINE?

Orange wines are actually white wines, but with a different winemaking process - they’re made by fermenting the juice with the grape skins, which is mostly done with red wines, not white. This extra step adds tannins, flavor, and a unique color to the wine.
Because of the skin contact, orange wines tend to have more herbal, aromatic notes, and they can also have a bit of bitterness depending on the grape, how long the skins are left in contact with the juice, and the vessel used for maturation. Unlike most white wines, they can also feature tannins (which are formed from the skins, which white wines do not use). Orange wines are a style that brings out some really interesting flavors that many people adore for their unique properties, whether easy going or complex.
