Pépin Orange is a natural wine crafted by Pépin, in the Alsace region in France. This orange wine is made with Gewürztraminer grapes alongside Muscat, Pinot Gris, Auxerrois & Sylvaner. The grapes saw a light 6 day maceration, and tastes very similar to Patrick Bouju “G&M” , with notes of papaya, lychee, peach.

Pepin state that this wine has:

Nose: Fairly open, reminiscent of a bouquet of dried flowers, prunes, cinnamon, sapphire, mojito (mint and citrus), camphor, curry, blood grapefruit, orange.

Finishes with Sichuan pepper and bitters such as grapefruit and dried flowers.

Food & wine pairings: Orange supreme with cinnamon, Far Breton, roast pork with
prunes, duck foie gras and snacked mango, Cuban-style chicken, panna cota with exotic fruits, salmon trout, Greek salad, bonito carpaccio, beet and nectarines.

What is the Pépin wine project?

Pépin wine is a new style of collaborative winery, formed by Jean & Pierre Dietrich of esteemed Domaine Archilée in Scherwiller, Alsace, as well as wine consultants Xavier Couturier and Pierre Sanchez of Duo Oenologie. The group work with local growers in Alsace to produce the Pépin range which stands for making no-added sulphite, vibrant and affordable natural wines which are sustainable and reward the growers in compensation very fairly too.

WHAT IS ORANGE WINE?

Orange wines are actually white wines, but with a different winemaking process - they’re made by fermenting the juice with the grape skins, which is mostly done with red wines, not white. This extra step adds tannins, flavor, and a unique color to the wine.
Because of the skin contact, orange wines tend to have more herbal, aromatic notes, and they can also have a bit of bitterness depending on the grape, how long the skins are left in contact with the juice, and the vessel used for maturation. Unlike most white wines, they can also feature tannins (which are formed from the skins, which white wines do not use). Orange wines are a style that brings out some really interesting flavors that many people adore for their unique properties, whether easy going or complex.
