In regards to Natural Wine, Sancerre, located in the Loire Valley of France, is a French region not as much known for Natural Wine as its Loire neighbours like Anjou or Tourraine. Sancerre is however, very renowned for conventional wine producers making Sauvignon Blanc wines. Situated on the eastern edge of the valley, this picturesque region benefits from a unique combination of climate and soil, making it perfect for winemaking.
The winemakers in Sancerre are drawn to this region for several reasons. Firstly, the terroir here is exceptional, with a mix of limestone and clay soils providing optimal conditions for growing grapes. The region’s cool climate, influenced by the nearby Loire River, allows for slower ripening of the grapes, resulting in wines with vibrant acidity and intense flavors.
However, whilst the region is reknown in the general wine world, there are hardly any Natural Wine Producers in the area, which is a shame. The most notable is Sebastien Riffault, who we have decided not to sell any more for reasons beyond his winemaking.
