Haloze 2022/23 is a natural wine crafted by Vino Gross, in the Štajerska region in Slovenia. This white wine is made with 40% Furmint, 40% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Welschriesling grapes. No added sulphites

Production details of Haloze: Haloze is made by Maria and Michael Gross in Štajerska Slovenija, Slovenia, in the Haloze region near the town of Ptuj. The blend is 40% Furmint, 40% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Welschriesling from calcareous marl soils (locally called Opok) at 250 to 390 metres, with vines aged 10 to 65 years. The Grosses farm without synthetic chemistry and use a lunar-calendar approach. The wine spends at least a full year on the full lees in large Austrian foudres (900 to 2800 litres) before bottling. No added sulphur.

Tasting Notes: We have not yet tried this vintage of Haloze by Vino Gross, but we hear it has notes of yellow apple, citrus zest, fresh herbs and a fine textured mineral finish.

We ship every Wednesday. Order by Tuesday 10am.

Vino Gross

NATURAL WINES BY VINO GROSS

Vino Gross is the Slovenian project of Michael Gross, who used to run Weingut Gross in Austria's Südsteiermark with his brother. He started here in 2016, on land in Haloze his father bought in 2005, and now also farms around Maribor. The Haloze terraces sit at 250 to 490 metres, some with gradients over 65%, on opok, a limy marl under a thin topsoil that makes the vines root deep. Furmint is the star, alongside Sauvignon Blanc and Welschriesling.

Whites get two hours on skins at most, then ferment in large oak casks and spend a year on their lees. Around 70% of the wines are bottled without added sulphur. Start with Haloze, the regional wine, then the single-vineyard Furmints Gorca and Iglič, which show the salty, precise side of the grape. Colles is a single-parcel Sauvignon Blanc, and Penina is their sparkling Furmint. Their wines are exciting and pure and we highly recommend you try them.
