Zweigelt
Zweigelt is a red wine grape that is widely grown in Austria, particularly in the regions of Burgenland and Niederösterreich. It is also cultivated in other countries such as Germany, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.
This grape was created in the 1920s by Dr. Fritz Zweigelt, who crossed two grape varieties to produce a new and unique grape. It quickly gained popularity due to its ability to produce high-quality wines with intense flavors and a deep ruby color.
Zweigelt wines are known for their vibrant fruitiness, with flavors of black cherries, raspberries, and plums. They often have a medium to full body, with a good balance of acidity and tannins. Some examples may also exhibit spicy notes, such as black pepper or cloves.
Popular natural wine producers making good use of Zweigelt include Claus Preisinger, Koppitsch, Judith Beck, Joiseph and Sepp Muster.
