NATURAL WINES BY CHÂTEAU DE LA JAUBERTIE
Château de la Jaubertie sits in Colombier, near Monbazillac in Bergerac, just east of Bordeaux. Henry Ryman bought the estate with its 18th-century château in the early 1970s, and his son Hugh, who studied oenology in Bordeaux, has run it since 1999, now with the third generation involved. They farm 48 hectares, with the reds on the plateau and the whites lower down.
Most of the range is classic Bergerac, but Les Cépages Oubliés is their natural line, certified Vin Méthode Nature with nothing added. The name means forgotten grapes, and it brings back old south-western reds like Mérille and Fer Servadou alongside Malbec, with Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc for the white. Expect rounder, lower-acid wines at a very fair price, so the Rouge and Blanc are easy everyday bottles. Joe & Bertie is their pét-nat, fresh and fruity with a slightly bitter edge that keeps it lively.
