Götzen Riesling 2023 is a natural wine crafted by Kleines Gut, in the Württemberg region in Germany. This white wine is made with Riesling grapes from the Götzen vineyard, where limestone-rich soils dominate, giving the wine a firm mineral spine.

The grapes are grown on 60 year old vines, so have less yield but higher quality and intensity. Here, the grapes in the cellar are treated with great respect, resting on the lees in barrels for 2 years elevage to gain extra complexity.

Tasting notes:

  • Lime and green apple
  • White flowers
  • Wet stone / chalk minerality
  • Crisp, electric acidity

We ship every Wednesday. Order by Tuesday 10am.

NATURAL WINES BY KLEINES GUT

Kleines Gut means 'the little estate': three hectares in Uhlbach, a quiet valley just east of Stuttgart in Württemberg. Daniel Kurrle grew up across the road from vines his grandfather farmed, studied at Geisenheim and worked abroad before he and his partner Frederike Schmidt took over in 2019. A year later they left the local co-op. The plots, some with 60-year-old vines, sit on limestone, marl and loess.

Grapes are picked by hand, foot-trodden as whole bunches in open vats and fermented with wild yeasts. Most wines then age 12 to 18 months in old oak in a cellar dating from 1546 and are bottled by gravity. Most get no sulphur at all, a few a small dose at bottling. Start with the Vin de Soif Rouge or Blanc, then try the Götzen Riesling or the Häusle Merlot. The one-litre Schwabenmagnum is Lemberger and Trollinger aged in amphora.
