Tasting Pneuma 2021 by Roca Viva
...You unlikely know Roca Viva.
They’re not only super small on the production side, but quite new to the scene. We were thrilled to discover them at a wine fair in Poland, where their wines impressed over everyone else’s we tried, for their depth and complexity. Plus… its not common to find natural wines from Andalusia in Spain, and thats quite a shame. A lot of the production here goes towards conventional, fortified Sherry wines and this makes up most of the wine income of the region.
Roca Viva work with their own vineyard and local growers, having shown them the path towards sustainable agriculture and better vineyard management to increase the quality of their yield, even if it means less yield to harvest. This wine is a favourite of ours to recommend because it really has a gastronomic presence. Its quite something, especially if you give it a carafe.
Expect it to be complex, structured, unique and VERY special. Beautiful notes of caramel, walnut, baked apricot and salt shine through with each sip and it evolves nicely in the glass. Refined and though provoking.

The grapes for this wine were harvested in the second half of October 2021, then destemmed by hand and crushed by foot. After that, they were lightly pressed with a manual press. The wine was aged for 15 months in clay Dolium before being bottled in February 2023 unfiltered & unfined, and without added sulphur.
