Saint Aubin 1er Cru Blanc 'En Remilly' 2022 is a natural wine crafted by Domaine Derain, in the Burgundy region in France. This white wine is made with Chardonnay grapes, grown in Saint-Aubin planted in 1988 by Dominique Derain, located in the rocky part of Montrachet, on the upper slopes and still with holistic methods from the start.
This is a very sunny plot, south-facing on hard marble limestone. The roots grow between the faults.
This vibrant white wine sees direct pressing and barrel fermentation, and is aged on lees for 18 months. No added sulphites
How does Domain Derain's Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Blanc 'En Remilly' 2022 taste?
This crisp white Burgundy made by Julien Altaber and Carole Schwab is one to age to grasp it's full potential. Drinking it now, it is a little shy and there is a world of intracacies to come once it has time to rest and become more confident.
Generally, it is more on the lean and fresh side rather than rounded and creamy. There is a beautiful matchstruck reduction at first and burst of lime zest and a wet pebble mineralic edge. Carafe recommended, but aging 3-4 years would benefit this wine immensely.
Who runs Domain Derain in Burgundy?
Julien Altebar now runs the domaine with his wife and partner Carole Schwab, and interestingly founder Dominique Derain is also never too far away, still involved in the cellar tastings, even waxing the bottles when not travelling to other vineyards across the world in retirement.
