Saint-Aubin Chardonnay 2023 is a natural wine crafted by Domaine Derain, in the Burgundy region in France. This white wine is made with Chardonnay grapes, which are grown on a south facing hill of gravel, clay and limestone in "Le Ban" in Saint Aubin, replanted in 2007.
Directly pressed and vinified in the barrel, this pristine Chardonnay sees 18 months of elevage on the lees before bottling and really delivers.
How does Domaine Derain "Saint-Aubin Chardonnay" taste?
At first there is a lively, flinty reduction on the nose and perhaps in it's youth is a little shy at first, but if not aging then give it a carafe and you will be rewarded with a bright profile of honeymelon, zippy green apples, wet stone, meadow flowers and more.
Just give it that room to breathe and open up for an even better experience. There is a vibrant energy on the palate here and it will also age beautifully
Who runs Domain Derain in Burgundy?
Julien Altebar now runs the domaine with his wife and partner Carole Schwab, and interestingly founder Dominique Derain is also never too far away, still involved in the cellar tastings, even waxing the bottles when not travelling to other vineyards across the world in retirement. The pair also operate Burgundy winery Sextant from the same cellar.
