Indigo 2019 is a natural wine crafted by Aurélien and Charlotte Houillon of Domaine Houillon, in the region in the Rhone region of France. More specifically in Faucon, in the Vaucluse. This vintage of this famous wine from the domain (it changes most years) is made with 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache grapes.
This is big and bold, with Syrah very dominant on the palate. Quite iron like too, with dusky, prevailing sandy tannins. Quite herbal in ways and with blueberry, baked apple, blackberry and a savoury touch at the forefront. Whilst this is a 2019 vintage, it feels it could age longer to find a new dimension
NOTE: DRINK WITH COMPANY IN ONE SITTING, as whilst tasty it is unlikely to hold overnight.
Most of the vines are around 75 years old for the Indigo cuvee and the harvest is entirely destemmed, which is then followed by a 14-week maceration, usually in stainless steel vats. After this, the Indigo wine sees 14-16 months aging, also in tank. No added sulphites, as with all Domaine Houillon wines,
Aurélien Houillon, a native of Jura and another talented relative of Emmanuel Houillon of Maison Pierre Ovenoy in Jura has also worked at the estate in addition to other places before settling down in Rhone to work alongside his partner Charlotte. The wines are zero-zero as expected from the rest of the family and offer a big energy and depth.
