Edmund 2023 is a orange natural wine crafted by Gut Oggau, in the Burgenland region in Austria.
One of the joys of now working directly with Gut Oggau, after many years of promoting their wines buying indirectly, is the opportunity to get our hands on the rarer bottles for you….
One of these rarer bottles is Edmund, a mysterious character with just 533 bottles made to satisfy demand around the world, not to forget their own restaurant and private collection too. That’s not very many considering how popular Gut Oggau are globally!
The story of the wine is more intriguing however… and we have had the pleasure to visit the plot too. It’s a 0.5 hectare site where the vines have been left pretty much totally untamed with super minimal pruning, and thus left to grow almost as they would in the wild. (see the photo) Some have attached themselves to trees, the grass which surrounds the vines is long and wails with the wind. With no pesticides since 1970, the vines are mixed, so this is a field blend of mostly white varietals, and has been left to ferment on the skins for two weeks, which gives a surprising amount of grip for an Austrian orange. It’s full of bitter mandarin elements, macerated apricot, rosemary, vanilla essence and stoney minerality.
With it’s tannic structure still finding itself and perhaps ideal to be more integrated, we would recommend to lay this bottle to rest for a year or more and open when it will become more balanced in it’s structure. If you can’t wait, don’t serve too cold and pour in a carriage 30 minutes before opening.
