Retsina 2024 is a natural wine crafted by Kamara Pure, in the Macedonia region in Greece. This golden wine is made with Roditis and Assytiko grapes, in addition to PINE TREE RESIN, which is a very dominant flavour in this traditional Greek style of wine, which is like nothing else. Quite intense flavour profile, and very different to "normal" wines, please take note if not had before.
What is a Retsina wine?
Retsina is a traditional Greek white or rosé wine that is distinctively flavored with pine resin. Its origins trace back over 2,000 years, when ancient winemakers used pine pitch to seal wine amphorae and prevent oxidation. This practice imparted a characteristic aroma and taste, which over time became a valued and intentional style rather than a byproduct of preservation.
Retsina Production Process
Retsina is typically made from indigenous Greek grape varieties, most commonly Savatiano, sometimes blended with Assyrtiko or Roditis. The winemaking process follows standard white winemaking techniques but with one key addition: Aleppo pine resin is added during fermentation.
The resin (about 1 kilogram per 100 liters of must) is stirred into the fermenting juice, releasing its signature botanical flavours. The solids are then removed before bottling, leaving behind a subtle, resinous character—often described as herbal, piney, or eucalyptus-like, balancing the acidity and fruit of the wine.
Modern retsina, especially from quality producers, showcases a refined expression of this ancient style, offering a dry, crisp profile with citrus notes, salinity, and a touch of forest-like freshness. It pairs well with Greek meze, grilled fish, and herbal dishes.
Retsina remains protected under Traditional Appellation status in Greece, preserving its unique identity and production method.
