Pálava and Riesling Orange 2020 is a natural wine made with skin-contact maceration, crafted by Zdenek Omasta, in the Moravia region in Czech Republic. This orange wine is made with Pálava (related to Gewüztraminer) and Riesling grapes, and whilst we have not tried this specific wine from the producer, the others have ALL really impressed!

The Czech importer states that Zdenek Omasta 'Pálava & Riesling Orange 2020' is "a blend of Pálava and Riesling - two aromatic grape varieties coming together in this dry orange wine. Aromas of jasmine, lime, apple, orange and crushed gravel. 3-week skin contact and 12-month maturation Czech acacia barrels. This is not a funky orange. It’s crisp and fresh

WHAT IS ORANGE WINE?

Orange wines are actually white wines, but with a different winemaking process - they’re made by fermenting the juice with the grape skins, which is mostly done with red wines, not white. This extra step adds tannins, flavor, and a unique color to the wine.
Because of the skin contact, orange wines tend to have more herbal, aromatic notes, and they can also have a bit of bitterness depending on the grape, how long the skins are left in contact with the juice, and the vessel used for maturation. Unlike most white wines, they can also feature tannins (which are formed from the skins, which white wines do not use). Orange wines are a style that brings out some really interesting flavors that many people adore for their unique properties, whether easy going or complex.
